What it does
One tool, from link to library
Everything runs locally on your device. Nothing is uploaded anywhere.
Download
Paste a link and Sieve analyzes it and picks the right formats for you.
1000+ sites — YouTube, Vimeo, SoundCloud, Twitch and more, via the yt-dlp engine.
8 one-tap presets for the common "just get me the video / audio" cases.
Reliable background queue with pause, resume, and retry that survives being killed.
Transcode
Re-encode your own media on-device with real, tunable controls.
52 presets across H.264, HEVC, AV1, VP9, ProRes, DNxHR, audio-only and more.
Hardware-accelerated H.264/HEVC via Android MediaCodec, with automatic software fallback.
Software x264x265AV1 via a self-built, full-GPL FFmpeg.
Library
Grant one output folder and your files land straight there.
Pick a folder once through the Storage Access Framework; downloads and transcodes write to it.
Built-in browser over your granted folder.
Subtitle export and frame extraction straight into your library.
Private & free
Yours to keep, with nothing watching over your shoulder.
Nothing is uploaded — all downloading and transcoding happen on your device.
Self-updating engine — the downloader updates itself so newly-broken sites get fixed fast, no reinstall.
Fully open-source under GPLv3. No ads, no tracking, no account.
How it works
Three taps from link to file
No setup, no sign-in. Open Sieve and go.
01
Paste a link
Drop in a URL from any supported site. Sieve analyzes it and finds the available formats.
02
Pick a preset
Choose from eight one-tap presets — best video, a specific resolution, or audio-only.
03
Download
It runs in the background queue and lands in your chosen folder — ready to transcode if you like.
License & source
Open source, and openly compliant
Sieve for Android is licensed under the GNU General Public License, version 3 (GPLv3),
because it links GPL-licensed software at runtime — a self-built, full-GPL build of FFmpeg
and youtubedl-android (which bundles yt-dlp). Because those components are covered by the GPL,
the combined work as a whole is licensed under GPLv3. Every piece of source is linked below.
Sieve bundles a self-built FFmpeg (executed as a child process, never linked in-process),
statically linked with x264 and x265 and built full-GPL. The complete corresponding source is
the exact upstream commit of each project below, plus the build recipe
transcode/build-ffmpeg/ffbuild.sh
in the app repository. All three are unmodified upstream checkouts — no local patches.
Configure:--enable-gpl --enable-version3 --enable-libx264 --enable-libx265 --enable-jni --enable-mediacodec Toolchain: Android NDK r27.3.13750724 · minSdk API 26 · ABIs built: arm64-v8a (device) + x86_64 (emulator), 16 KB-aligned. Rebuild: run bash transcode/build-ffmpeg/ffbuild.sh all on a Linux host with the NDK — it clones the exact commits above and verifies 16 KB LOAD alignment.
Three-year written offer. This offer of corresponding source is valid for three (3) years from the date of distribution of the corresponding binary.
Sieve is a general-purpose tool for downloading and converting media that you have the right to access.
Only download or convert content that you own, have created, or are otherwise permitted to access, and
respect the rights of content owners, applicable terms of service, and the laws of your jurisdiction.
Sieve is not affiliated with or endorsed by any content platform or service.
Support the project
Free, and staying that way
Sieve has no ads. No trackers. No "monetized" installs, and no code that quietly profits
from what you tap or download. That isn't an oversight — it's the entire point. A tool
this personal should never be selling you back to someone.
Keeping it clean, independent, and free for everyone takes real work — and that work
continues no matter what. But if Sieve has earned a place on your phone, a donation helps it
stay exactly what it is, and lets it move faster.
100% of it goes toward keeping Sieve ad-free and independent.
The project stays open-source, GPLv3, and free for all — always.
The work never stops; your support just carries it further.
